Fight Your 9 Work Demons

By Andrew - Posted on 01 July 2008

In my last post 9 Work Demons Are Time Bandits I mention what they are and invited you to add your own, if you haven't done so, please do so here. Now it is time to fight these 9 demons!

  1. TV - Turn it off. Yes it can be hard especially if you can glue to a TV like a TV addict. It's not enough to sit away not seeing the TV and still be able to listen. While you might think it is a nice background, it is for some reason more distractive than anything else, including listing to Heavy Metal, Rapp and Radio broadcast of some kind. TV audio draws you back to the TV to see the picture. So turn it off and set a fixed time to watch TV if you have to.
  2. Turn On Music. While I like to work and listen to music I have a certain preference. When I am working I can not use to relaxing music like some of these Esoteric Relaxing music or any popular music with a singer. I catch my self singing along but not be able to write or do any such job. Best music is still Jazz and Classical music. Find out what works best for you, if you are not sure.
  3. Give 100% By doing so from the beginning you will not get into time trouble and you respect yourself and, if your have, your client. Don't do 110%, because that only will result in delays, due to high unnecessary perfection.
  4. outsource or at least think about it. To outsource some of your work will free you from work you have to do yourself otherwise. You can concentrate on the work you enjoy or simply spend more time doing other things you could not. Even so you have to pay for such work it might be a good investment in yourself and it can pay itself when you are able to re-charge. With max power everything goes easier and faster and the end result is much better as well.
  5. organize your work in such a way that destructions are kept to a bare minimum. If you like me, having tons of ideas lots of contacts, websites, gadgets, IM, skype, social networks, forums, emails and so on it is easy to get distracted. No matter if it is urgent, family, friends or business. The messages keep coming and making there noise. If you have them all on your PC, get an other inexpensive one or if you have a Mac create a new user id that is only for working, no IM, no messages that are not work related and keep it to a few.

Now obvious everyone has different ways to cope with his work environment and the specific distractions. Do deal with them right away to your best ability and you should see an improvement. Keep on doing it, fine tune and make it a better routine.

Please leave your thoughts and share your demons defense trick. You can leave an audio, video or written message.
